MAKING OF FOAM LATEX HANDS

Hi again! It’s been a while since the last time I posted. I have resumed my stop motion short film. It’s called Gratis et amore. It was supposed to be my final project for a master’s degree I did a couple of years ago at BAU. I had a terrific time there.

I couldn’t finish the short on time and since then I’ve been working on it on and off. I’ve got a lot of stuff of the making of the film, because I have been on it for a long time (and still am). So I decided not only to make time lapse videos of the process, but some mini tutorials as well. They are not meant to be a professional guide, I just want to share my experience which could be useful to you. I’ve learnt myself so much online and want to do my bit (as well as promoting my short, of course).

¡Hola de nuevo! Hace tiempo que no publico. He retomado mi corto en stop motion. Se llama Gratis et amore. Se suponía que iba ser mi proyecto final de un máster que hice hace un par de años en BAU. Me lo pasé genial.

No pude acabar el corto a tiempo y desde entonces he estado trabajando en él a ratos. Tengo un montón de material del making of del corto, porque he estado en ello durante mucho tiempo (y sigo). Así que he decidido no sólo hacer videos time lapse del proceso, sino también algunos tutoriales. No pretende ser una guía profesional, sólo quiero compartir mi experiencia, que a lo mejor te es útil. He aprendido mucho en internet y quiero aportar mi granito de arena (y promocionar mi corto, claro).

Hands are one of the most important elements in my short because there are many close-ups of them. The first models were made of plasticine and I liked their texture but they were impossible to animate, so I decided to make moulds for foam latex.

Las manos son uno de los elementos más importantes de mi corto porque hay muchos primeros planos de las mismas. Los primeros modelos los hice de plastilina y me gustó la textura pero eran imposibles de animar, así que decidí hacer moldes para espuma de látex.

The first sculpts I made were in modelling paste.

Las primeras esculturas las hice en pasta de modelar.

That was my initial mistake as you can see in the next set of photos.

Ése fue mi error inicial tal como puede verse en las siguientes fotos.

  

 

This is the mess that happened in my first try. I decided to gather the photos of the making of the hands, not just to keep visual record of the process, but to make a tutorial for beginners with advices and tricks to help you avoiding errors.

Éste es el desastre que ocurrió en mi primer intento. Decidí reunir las fotos de la elaboración de las manos, no sólo para tener un registro visual del proceso, sino para hacer un tutorial para principiantes con consejos y trucos que ayuden a evitar errores. 

1.Sculpt or maquette

   Escultura o maqueta

I was looking at different options for the sculpt and I chose Clayette by Chavant. This product have Soft, Medium and Hard versions and I went for the Medium one. I am very happy with the result and, furthermore, it hasn’t got any animal ingredients, as the company very promptly and kindly informed me after my request, so I highly recommend it.

I had to start all over again. You can use a simple armature because you won’t animate the maquette and you don’t have to worry about ductility and resistance.

Estuve mirando varias opciones para la escultura y escogí Clayette de Chavant. Este producto tiene versiones blanda, media y dura y opté por la media. Estoy muy contenta con el resultado y, además, no tiene ingredientes animales, tal y como la empresa me informó muy rápida y amablemente tras preguntárselo, así que lo recomiendo encarecidamente.

Tuve que empezar de nuevo. Puedes usar una estructura sencilla ya que no animarás la escultura y no tienes que preocuparte por la ductilidad y la resistencia.

Éstas son cinco de las seis esculturas que hice para el corto.

  

2.Clay bed

   Lecho de arcilla

Once you have finished your sculpt you need to make a clay bed for which I used WED clay. You place your maquette on the bed and surround it with more WED clay up to the middle line, the seam, that you can previously draw in the sculpt.

Una vez terminada la escultura tienes que hacer una base de arcilla para la cual usé WED clay. Sitúas la escultura en el lecho y la rodeas con más WED clay hasta la línea media, de unión, que has dibujado previamente en la escultura.

 

Then you need to build a wall around. For that you can use several materials, such as wood, but I prefer toy plastic bricks. If you do so, remember to patch the weak joints with more WED clay to avoid leakage.

Entonces tienes que construir un muro alrededor. Para ello puedes usar varios materiales, como madera, pero yo prefiero piezas de plástico. Si lo haces así, recuerda tapar las juntas débiles con más WED clay para que no haya escapes.

 

 

3.Plaster

  Yeso

Before pouring the plaster you have to coat the sculpt, the clay bed and the inside of the walls with petroleum jelly.

Antes de verter el yeso tienes que cubrir con vaselina la escultura, la arcilla y el interior de las paredes.

You mix the powder with water according to the instructions. In my case was 250 g of powder per 100 g of water. I used Exaduro by Hebör, a Spanish brand which I bought at Formx. There isn’t an English version of this product in their site, but I think that Ultracal 30 is the equivalent (you should check it, just in case). The staff at Formx are very kind and helpful, don’t hesitate to ask, every time I’ve been there they gave me a hand or offered me a great piece of advice.

Mezcla el yeso en polvo y el agua según las instrucciones. En mi caso eran 250g de polvo por cada 100 g de agua. Utilicé Exaduro de Hebör, una marca española que compré en Formx. No tienen una versión en inglés de este producto en su página web, pero creo que Ultracal 30 es el equivalente (compruébalo, por si acaso). El personal de Formx son muy amables y serviciales, siempre que he ido me han echado una mano o me han dado un buen consejo.

Maybe it’s not necessary for you but I needed help (in my case from my husband) both with the plaster and the mixing of the foam latex. It is easier in both processes to coordinate with somebody else.

Quizás no te haga falta, pero yo necesité ayuda (en mi caso de mi marido) tanto con el yeso como con la mezcla para la espuma de látex. Es más fácil en ambos procesos coordinarse con alguien.

I used three layers of plaster. You need to wait until it’s hardened before adding a new layer. When the last layer is added, you have to wait for a day to let the plaster cure.

Usé tres capas de yeso. Tienes que esperar hasta que se ha endurecido antes de añadir una nueva. Tras añadir la última capa, hay que esperar un día para que el yeso se seque del todo.

  

We then remove the bricks. We turn it upside down and remove the clay. Do not take the sculpt off the mould, as I did by mistake (you can see it in the photo).

Entonces quitamos las piezas. Lo ponemos bocabajo y quitamos la arcilla. No saques la escultura del molde como hice yo por error (lo puedes ver en la foto).

  

 

After that, it is necessary to clean the surface and start building the walls again, coat everything with petroleum jelly and pour the plaster.

Después es necesario limpiar la superficie y empezar a construir las paredes otra vez, cubrirlo todo con vaselina y echar el yeso.

 

  

4.Opening the moulds

    Abriendo los moldes

To open the moulds you should use a couple of screwdrivers to pry them. It could happen that a piece of your sculpt tears apart, as it occurred to me, but that’s not a problem for the mould. The next thing to do is cleaning the moulds to leave them ready for the latex.

Para abrir los moldes deberías usar un par de destornilladores para hacer palanca. Puede ocurrir que una parte de la escultura se rompa, como me pasó a mí, pero no supone un problema para el molde. Lo siguiente es limpiar los moldes para dejarlos listos para el látex.

 

 

5.Armature

   Estructura

There are different types of wire you can use for stop motion. Initially I tried with copper, aluminium and tin-lead alloy. Copper is highly resistant but difficult to animate. Conversely, tin-lead is very flexible but fragile. So I decided to use aluminium instead and it’s the only one I have used with foam latex and put in an oven and I can honestly recommend.

For the bones I used epoxy.

Hay diferentes tipos de alambre que puedes usar para stop motion. Al principio lo intenté con cobre, aluminio y aleación de estaño y plomo. El cobre es muy resistente pero difícil de animar. Por el contrario, el estaño-plomo es muy flexible pero frágil. Así que decidí usar aluminio y es lo único que he usado con espuma de látex y metido en un horno y puedo recomendar honestamente.

Para los huesos usé epoxi.

     

 

 

      

 

6. Foam latex.

    Espuma de látex

To cast your foam latex hand, first you have to mix the ingredients. You’ll need a foam latex kit. I recommend the kit by Monster Makers. I bought it at Formx, too. As tools you need a mixer, a food scale and a spoon.

Para hacer la espuma de látex, primero hay que mezclar los ingredientes. Necesitarás un kit de espuma de látex. Yo recomiendo el de Monster Makers. También lo compré en Formx. Como herramientas, te hará falta una batidora, una báscula de cocina y una cuchara.

In the Monster Makers site you can find a Processing Guidelines and Instructions pdf, which comes inside the kit, too, so I’m not going to explain what they do in a more complete way. Let me just introduce to you the components so you can become familiar with them. The big bottle is the Base, the next in size is the Microcellular Foaming Agent, and then you have the Standard Cure. All of them mix together first, and then you add the Gelling Agent. Finally, the smallest one is the Mold Release, which you don’t mix.

En la página de Monster Makers tienes una Guía e Instrucciones de Procesado en pdf que también viene con el kit, así que no voy a explicar lo que ellos han hecho de manera más completa. Voy a presentarte los componentes para que te familiarices con ellos. La botella grande es la Base, el siguiente en tamaño es el Microcellular Foaming Agent, y luego está la Standard Cure. Todos ellos se mezclan primero y luego se añade el Gelling Agent. Por útlimo, el más pequeño es el Mold Release, que no se mezcla.

You’ll have to adapt the times to the particular humidity and temperature in your place. This is the result of my trial and error approximation.

Tienes que adaptar los tiempos a la humedad y temperaturas particulares de donde estés. Éste es el resultado de mi aproximación por ensayo y error.

Before mixing the components of the kit you have to brush on the Mold Release and let it dry (in my case, one hour minimum).

Antes de mezclar los componentes del kit tienes que extender con pincel el Mold Release y dejarlo secar (en mi caso, como mínimo una hora).

Now you mix the latex ingredients, you fill the moulds with the mixture and place the armature inside. Put the moulds together and tie them strongly and let the latex gel for 20 minutes before putting the mould into the oven.

Ahora mezclas los ingredientes, llenas los moldes con la mezcla y pones la estructura dentro. Junta los moldes y átalos fuerte y deja que el látex se gelifique durante 20 minutos antes de meterlo en el horno.

It is very important that you don’t use your everyday oven for this. You mustn’t cook in an oven used for latex, it becomes toxic.

The oven should be preheated and I turned it on while the latex was gelling. The optimal temperature is 160 ºF or 71ºC but I found out that I needed 85 ºC. You will need to adapt the temperatures and oven time to your particulars. According to the instructions the time can vary from 2 to 10 hours.

Es muy importante que no uses tu horno habitual para esto. No debes cocinar en un horno que se haya usado para látex porque se vuelve tóxico.

El horno debe precalentarse y yo lo enciendo mientras el látex se gelifica. La temperatura óptima es de 160 ºF o 71ºC pero descubrí que en mi caso me iba bien a 85 ºC. Tendrás que adaptar las temperaturas y el tiempo en horno a tu situación. Según las instrucciones el tiempo puede variar entre 2 y 10 horas.

This is my first attempt with the wrong time and temperature. When I opened the mould the hand seemed ok, but when I removed it, in a matter of seconds, it shrank. Tears were falling from my eyes.

Éste es mi primer intento con el tiempo y temperatura equivocados. Cuando abrí el molde la mano parecía estar bien, pero cuando la saqué, en cuestión de segundos encogió. Me caían lágrimas de los ojos.

 

After several attempts I started to get good results.

Tras varios ensayos empecé a obtener buenos resultados.

 

            

The only thing left was trimming the latex.

Lo único que faltaba era recortar el látex.

7. Painting

   Pintura

Now you can paint the latex if you want. In my case I used white and black painting, because my short is B/W. To paint on latex you should use a mix of acrylic and Pros-Aide No Tack (slightly less than a half) and a pinch of talcum powder.

Ahora ya puedes pintar el látex si lo deseas. En mi caso usé pinturas blanca y negra porque mi corto es en B/N. Para pintar sobre látex tienes que usar una mezcla de acrílico y Pros-Aide No Tack (algo menos de la mitad) y una pizca de polvo de talco.

    

And finally, after a lot of pain, these are my six hands for the short. I hope you’ll see them animated soon.

Y finalmente, tras mucho dolor, aquí están las seis manos para el corto. Espero que puedas verlas animadas pronto.
